The UK faces an epidemic of van break-ins as tool theft numbers rocket.

There are growing concerns over the recent spate of van break-ins littering the UK. Over the past few months, numbers have spiked dangerously, with many local businesses unfortunately falling victim.

The main motivation for these break-ins is the acquisition of power tools. Many businesses store their tools in their van overnight, unwittingly becoming targets for thieves. Sat-Navs, loose change and stereos are also targeted during break-ins.

A recent study by BBC Radio 5 Live found tool theft had risen by two thirds since 2015.

Forty-five UK police forces supplied data to the BBC regarding tool theft, and the results were shocking. In 2014/15, there were a total of 14,063 thefts. However, by 2016/17, these numbers had sharply risen to 22,749.

Many officers suggest the rocketing numbers on the ready availability of skeleton keys. Others blame the ‘peel and steal’ method, whereby thieves apply pressure to van doors using their knees and body weight. This allows them to peel the top of the door down – much like a can of sardines – and gain access to the vehicle.

However, simple precautions can be taken to prevent tool theft.

Police forces have released some basic tips to help fight the rocketing figures. Their advice includes:

• ALWAYS ensure your vehicle is locked and NEVER leave your keys in the ignition.
• If possible, don’t leave tools or valuable items in your vehicle overnight.
• If the above is not possible, lock or immobilise your equipment when it’s not in use.
• Visibly mark your tools using an engraving kit. Place a sign in your van to say you have done so to deter any thieves!
• Keep a record of all the tools in your vehicle. Also, retain any receipts, should you need to make an insurance claim.
• If possible, park your van in a garage or install motion lighting for additional security.
